Hey there, Boss Moms! Let’s have a heart-to-heart for a second. I’m literally sitting in bed with my laptop and a cup of coffee because life is busy, messy, and beautifully chaotic—and that’s just how we roll, right? Right now, we’re in full swing planning the Boss Mom Virtual Retreat. In the middle of it all, the amazing team at Pursuing Results (shoutout to my friend Matt Johnson) gave me a nudge: “Dana, you need something fresh for next week.”

So, here I am, in a borrowed Airbnb in Lake Tahoe, ready to chat with you about something that’s at the core of every successful business: messaging.

Here’s the deal: Messaging isn’t some buzzword or trendy marketing trick. It’s not about having the flashiest ads or the prettiest Instagram grid. Messaging is the foundation of your business—the bridge between you and your audience. If you feel like your business is stuck, chances are your messaging is the culprit.

What is Messaging, Really?

Let’s break it down. Messaging isn’t just clever slogans or polished marketing copy. It’s the story you tell, the beliefs you stand for, and how you connect with the people who matter most—your audience. It’s not your logo, your brand colors, or your website design. It’s your voice, your vibe, and the integrity behind everything you share.

Messaging is how people decide if they like you, trust you, and ultimately want to invest in what you’re offering. If they don’t feel a connection, they won’t care—and if they don’t care, they won’t buy. But when your messaging is authentic, clear, and aligned with who you truly are, it becomes magnetic.

Why Messaging is Always the Problem

Here’s the thing: If your social media isn’t growing, your messaging needs work. If people are engaging with your content but not buying, guess what—it’s your messaging. If your emails aren’t getting opened or clicked on, yep, it’s all about messaging.

Why? Because messaging is how you connect. It’s what your audience sees, feels, and experiences every time they interact with your brand. When your messaging is spot-on, it does the heavy lifting for you. It grabs attention, builds trust, and keeps people coming back for more.

The Role of Authenticity in Messaging

Let me be real with you: Life is messy. I forget things. Sometimes I record podcasts from bed because, well, that’s real life. And guess what? That’s part of my messaging.

My audience knows I’m human. They know I’m not perfect, and that makes my brand relatable. I’m not here to be polished just for the sake of looking good. My goal is to show up authentically, with integrity, and share the behind-the-scenes moments that make me, well, me.

That’s the magic of messaging. It’s not about presenting a perfect image. It’s about being real. It’s about saying, “This is who I am, and this is what I stand for.”

How to Nail Your Messaging

Now, you might be thinking, “Alright, Dana, but how do I actually fix my messaging?” Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered. Let’s dive into some practical steps.

1. Get Clear on Your Core Beliefs

Start with this question: What do I stand for? What do I believe needs to change in my industry or the world? Your messaging should reflect those beliefs and the values you’re fiercely passionate about.

For example, one of my core beliefs is that integrity always trumps quick wins. I’m not about chasing trends that don’t align with my values. I want to attract women who are ready to build something meaningful and lasting—not just follow the next shiny thing.

2. Be Consistent

Consistency is everything. If your messaging is all over the place, your audience won’t know what you stand for. This doesn’t mean you have to say the same thing every day, but everything you share should align with your core message.

For instance, if you’re a parenting coach, your messaging might focus on empowering moms to parent with confidence. That means your content—whether it’s tips, stories, or personal insights—should always reflect that mission.

3. Speak with Passion

When your messaging is dialed in, you won’t be able to stop talking about it. It’s like finding your favorite song—you just have to share it. Passionate messaging is magnetic. People can feel your energy, and they’re drawn to it.

Think about Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman. There’s this rehearsal video where he wasn’t supposed to sing, but he couldn’t hold back. That’s the kind of energy your messaging should have—something you can’t contain.

4. Focus on Your Audience

Here’s a game-changer: Your messaging isn’t just about you. It’s about your audience. What are they struggling with? What do they believe that you want to challenge? How can you show them a better way?

For example, many of my clients believe live launches are the only way to make money. I challenge that by showing them the stress and burnout live launches can cause—and offering evergreen strategies as an alternative.

5. Tell Stories

Stories are your secret weapon. They make your message relatable, memorable, and impactful. Share stories that highlight your core beliefs, showcase your journey, and connect with your audience on a human level.

Why Messaging Matters More Than Ever

In today’s fast-paced, content-overloaded world, messaging is your secret sauce. It’s what sets you apart, builds trust, and creates a loyal community around your brand. When your messaging is clear, consistent, and authentic, it becomes the foundation for everything else in your business—from social media to sales.

So, if you’re feeling stuck or struggling to grow, take a hard look at your messaging. Ask yourself: Is it clear? Is it consistent? Does it reflect who I am and what I stand for? If not, it’s time to make a change.
